On Feb 22, Federal Trade Commission announced a settlement with HTC America. The agency claims the mobile device manufacturer “failed to take reasonable steps to secure the software it developed for its smartphones and tablet computers, introducing security flaws that placed sensitive information about millions of consumers at risk.”
The company will release software patches for its current phones and “undergo independent security assessments every other year for the next 20 years.”
The FTC also announced yesterday that it will hold a public forum on threats to smartphones and other mobile devices from malware and spyware. It will be free and open to the public June 4 in Washington, D.C. The agency is currently accepting recommendations for discussion topics or requests to serve as panelists.
